The objective of this project was to design an overnight campground and Welcome Center that was informed by the ecological analysis of the Warner Nature Center grounds. My programming welcomes kids to discover nature’s environmental processes through physical & educational immersion. Exploratory trails, educational classes cabins that blend with the landscape and teach visitors about the land, natural processes, animal life and human interference on the surrounding environment.

Lowertown, St. Paul is home to many businesses, a young artists community and regionally significant shorebird habitat along the Mississippi riverfront. In the near future, Lowertown will also host a baseball stadium and the Central Corridor light rail central station. Despite it's centrality, infrastructure severs the site, creating a no-man's land and disconnecting people from three unique natural settings within an urban environment: the Mississippi river, Bruce Vento Nature Sanctuary and Swede Hollow Park. Urban development and climate change threaten this important ecological corridor. Our goal was to choreograph physical connections for people and wildlife in a manner that anticipates the flux of urban growth and climate change while nurturing the processes of the natural environment within this location so they can continue to thrive. This project was built upon work produced in a previous charrette (see project "Charrette Exploration") and done in partnership with Becky Alexander, Kristen Murray and Bjorn Olson. In January of 2012 our work was requested to be presented to the Greater Lowertown Master Plan Task Force.

A winter sunset at the Riverfront Inlet Wetland and Amphitheater. The Inlet Walkway serves as an access point for people and water. One can walk to the river to launch a canoe or take pause for a quiet moment. In the spring, the Inlet Walkway allows the water to ascend up the pathway and spill over the amphitheater steps registering spring's snowmelt. From here, the water continues through constructed wetlands and is directed into Bruce Vento Nature Sanctuary, reseeding the Sanctuary with each flood so as to establish a robust seedbank for a future flooplain forest. As climate change stands to dramatically reduce regional floodplain forests, our plan facilitates their growth creating regionally critical habitat over time.

During early summer, one stops to rest and read on a bench in Bruce Vento Nature Sanctuary, overlooking the wetland wildlife and a view of Downtown St. Paul in the distant background. Once a prairie, years of flooding and reseeding have allowed for the establishment of a flourishing floodplain forest.

There is a visible and audible aliveness to Mfangano Island, Kenya. The island is rapidly changing with a growing population, greater access to information and increasing economic insecurity. The island's forests are quickly being exhausted as many are turning to the land as a survival responses to the lack of economic opportunity. A rich cultural history is tied to the Mfangano's existing Sacred Forests. Losing the forests, in essence, means losing culture. My proposal design a framework for the reforestation of Mfangano Island in a way that protects the environment by leveraging and strengthening the power of the community's cultural history and identity while demonstrating the economic benefit of reforestation for the residents of Mfangano. I am working in partnership with an NGO on the island, Organic Health Response. Follow my capstone blog.

A highway separates North Minneapolis from the Mississippi River and nearby neighborhoods. Vacant lots, industrial areas and vehicle dominated streets further disconnect residents from local greenspace and regional amenities. The project objective was to create and design a connection to the Mississippi River from North Minneapolis. My partner and I developed “The ParkLink,” a framework that unifies greenspace, strengthens the community and connects people to the river. ParkLink is a wayfinding icon and greenspace connector, a brand for neighborhood improvement and a community engagement tool. Network connections create a framework of access to greenspace that is never farther than a ten minute walk from anywhere in North Minneapolis. The streets that form the ParkLink’s connections were chosen for their ability to be transformed for bike and pedestrian use. “The Tool Kit” allows city officials, park officials and residents to choose programing options to replace existing vacant lots on a block-by-block basis. This tool kit lets residents customize their local open space needs and accounts for time and scale; creating allowances for changing demographics and density. To complete the unification and strengthening of the streets and vacant lots in North Minneapolis, we connect the community to the river with land bridges and an under utilized destination parks along The Mississippi. This project was done in partnership with Sarah Ash.

North Minneapolis has over 20 parks and serves as the gateway to North Mississippi Regional Park, one of Minneapolis’ most opportune places to access and experience the Mississippi River. It only makes sense that instead of ignoring these assets, we put forth efforts to encourage their use. Minneapolis has a history of linking greenspace to great effect. Unfortunately, North Minneapolis has often been left out of this phenomenon. It’s park spaces possess an abundance of potential great views, old growth trees and access to the kind of nature that is rare in cities. Unifying these spaces via a ParkLink will offer more people access to the unique qualities of North Minneapolis’ great parks and to the Mississippi River itself.

The ParkLink not only strengthens neighborhood connections, it works like a membrane, allowing access to the greater metropolitan area via the Grand Rounds, Shingle Creek Trail, Summit Avenue Trail, Cedar Creek LRT Trail and the Columbia Parkway Trail. There is also potential for a future connection to the Loose Line State Trail.

As the Baby Boom generation ages the increase in the senior population is expected to produce a lower employment/population ratio in the future, with negative implications for state tax revenues.
Three Ring Gardens began as a seed planted by students at Gordon Parks High School two years ago. In March of 2011, Students for Design Activism (SDA) was approached to work with GPHS to transform two nearby vacant lots, once known as Circus Hill, into a community greenspace and urban agriculture program. As co-founder of SDA, I helped to develop the analysis, concept design and schematic design. This work served to create a vision for the school and the community at large. Within one year from our first meeting with GPHS, Three Ring Gardens has been supported by the city of St. Paul, Union Park District Council, the Central Corridor Funders Collaborative and endorsed by Will Allen of Growing Power. As part of this project I developed the renderings, the blog, press releases and presented the project to various city officials and councils. Three Ring Gardens will be the focus of a two week studio project for second year MLAs. I will be a guest lecturer and reviewer for that studio project. Work on Three Ring Gardens is done in partnership with Anna Lawrence Bierbrauer and Derek Schilling.

Regionally unique, this park will foster an education of food production, ecology, stormwater management, and alternative energy endeavors in the everyday lives of the students. For the larger community at large, it becomes a place for public art, pick-up games, outdoor performances, or a simple breath of fresh air. Upon completion, Three Ring Gardens will serve as the only truly public green space in over a half-mile radius.

The Bike Pasture The Bike Pasture was spurred out of a design charrette that would finalize a design for a demonstration garden to be monitored and built by a May Term class. The scope of this project grew beyond the capacity of the class, but was further developed by myself and Elizabeth Turner in April of 2011. Our project focus was to create a replicable design for under-utilized spaces on campus and best practices methods for transforming those campus spaces into productive and regenerative places in order to serve university community. There are numerous disregarded greenspaces on campus that are blocked by ad hoc bike parking forming a barrier between students and those open spaces. Recognizing this as an opportunity to design a multi-functional space, the Bike Pasture will serve Rapson Hall at the University of Minnesota by adding an additional eighty four spaces of bike parking, space for socializing, studying, while capturing runoff on-site by replacing 7500 sq. ft. of turf grass with permeable materials and native plantings. Vegetation and monitoring systems will also act as living labs for students in Rapson Hall. I worked on a range of tasks within this project, including: concept designs, schematic designs, final designs, speaking with manufacturers, groundskeepers and university officials. Landscape Architecture faculty have made The Bike Pasture the primary project of a construction details class for second year MLAs. The Bike Pasture project is on track to begin construction in Spring of 2012. All final work for this project is in partnership with Elizabeth Turner and Prescott Morrill.

The public plaza just outside the Guthrie Theater is a large open area with temperature and light extremes, little vegetation and adequate social space despite its iconic location. In order to attract people into the space, I designed a seating area that also served as planters as well as stairs. The paving is a combination of limestone pavers and in-laid LED lighting to soften the character of the space while creating an attractive outdoor public space that compliments the building as well.

Lily Plaza is a courtyard that serves as a ‘walkthrough’ space on the University of Minnesota campus. The goal of the project was to create a planting design that produced shade and gathering spaces. My design concept is about the interruption of movement so as to draw attention to the plaza and attract people into it. Meant to break pedestrian traffic, tree plantings physically interrupt the path while also providing shade. Grass panels of varied elevations slow movement and double as gathering spaces. The interruption of pace, visual focus and continual grade make this garden a destination rather than a walkway. This project was part of a planting design class.

Drawing from the ecology and aesthetics of a Minnesotan biome, this conceptual garden design project was inspired by the Prairie Grassland biome. Inspired by the complexity of prairie grass root structures and a seemingly infinite horizon, The Prairie Wilderness Garden, subtly displays these natural elements. Entering the garden, visitors walk up a grassy mound enveloped by walls planted with prairie grasses at their peaks. The wall heights sit at a uniform elevation, expressing the endless horizon of the prairie. A runnel exposes the unseen, complexity of prairie grass roots that connect the land to the water.
